What does an Ironman 70.3 actually cost?

What does an Ironman 70.3 actually cost?

I spent over $5,000 AUD prepping for Sunshine Coast Ironman 70.3!

The races aren’t cheap but you can do them economically. It may burn a hole in your pocket but the mental and physical benefits are immeasurable. The prep shaped me into a more disciplined and resilient individual and I made connections and built relationships with like minded people on my journey.

Buuut because everything has a cost, this is what Sunshine Coast Ironman 70.3 cost me two years ago over the 12 week prep:

Non-negotiables

  • $600 race entry
  • $1,200 travel expenses
  • $500 bike (mine actually cost $2,500 but this is factored in below)
  • $1,200 gear (wetsuit, shoes, race kit, etc)
  • $300 fuel (electrolytes, gels, supplements)
  • $1,000 Coaching

A total budget for a Ironman 70.3 will be around $4,200 AUD ($2,700USD)

Luxuries

  • $2,000 additional cost for bike (However you can find great second hand road bikes for $500)
  • $500 physios/ massages
  • $300 additional fuel (I am a big boy)
  • $1,000 for additional groceries each week
  • $800 Bike Mechanics/tweaks (I am no handy man so needed the mechanic)

GRAND TOTAL of about $8,000AUD or $5,000USD

There are definitely some costs that could have been avoided or reduced but this is a realistic budget (for example if I did a race closer to home there would be no travel expenses). This budget will ensure you enjoy the process and not get broken along the way!

Onto the next.
